Is school that important?

Why do teachers think it is essential for my 5 and 7 year old to be at school every day and complain if they have a couple of days off sick, they aren't teenagers!  Teachers seem to be a totally different breed.  I would have thought that having a sick child in the class spreading germs was a bad thing...
